Regulatory status

  • The country ratified the Cartagena Protocol in April 2004.
  • The competent national authority includes the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources and National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (NISIR).
  • A national biotechnology and biosafety policy exists and biosafety act was adopted in 2007.
  • In the capacity building sector, NEPAD Agency ABNE sponsored the participation of Zambian regulators in biosafety study tours and biosafety short courses. Several biosafety training workshops have also been organized in Lusaka since February 2015.
