Regulatory status

  • The country signed the Cartagena Protocol in May 2000 and ratified it in February 2005.
  • The competent national authority is National Commission on Research, Science and Technology.
  • A national biosafety Act exist since 2006, and provides for transboundary movement, contained use, LMOs for direct use as food, intentional introduction into the environment (AIA), transit, pharmaceuticals, handling, transport, packaging and identification, LMOs for direct use as feed, LMOs for processing.
